The woman’s soccer team faced the visiting Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Sept. 11, winning 3-0. This win continued the Lady Lions 4-0 winning streak.
Piedmont’s first goal came from a corner kick by first-year forward Cassidy Reich. Her ball hit third-year forward Megan Hatfield, the ball was tapped by the goal keeper, who made the save, but third-year midfielder Morgan Edelman secured the ball not long after and pushed it into the goal making the score 1-0 for the Lions.
“This is my second time getting the first goal of a game this season. This year, I’m not only contributing to the team defensively but offensely as well. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for us,” said Edelman.
During the second half, Hatfield scored off of Reich’s second corner kick of the night. This doubled Piedmont’s advantage, giving her a third goal in 2015.
“As a forward, it is my job to score, I do think it comes easier when my team is helping me achieve, and they were. I can’t wait to see how to rest of the season goes,” said Hatfield.
In the second half, third-year defender Haley Hall ripped a shot from more than 30 yards back.
This game was another scoreless performance from the starting fourth-year goalkeeper Michaela Gardner as she held the Mariners without a goal for nearly 77 minutes before freshman Ashlyn Atnip entered for her first career appearance.
The Lions travel to Raleigh, NC to face William Peace University on Sept. 25. They will not play on their home turf again until Oct. 3 against Huntingdon College.
