The men’s lacrosse team clenched a close game victory over Millsaps College on Saturday, Feb. 8.

The Millsaps Majors were able to stay within two goals of the Lions for most of the game, but they could not hold on in the forth quarter. They were defeated 12-10 by the Piedmont Lions.

With five minutes left in the first quarter the Majors went up by one. The Lions immediately answered with a goal by sophomore Taylor Carter. The score was tied 1-1 going into the second quarter. Junior Nick Green, hit a shot within the first two minutes of the second quarter to put Piedmont up by one. After Millsaps tied it up again junior Steve Blanchard made a diving effort at goal to put the Lions up by one again. Piedmont was winning 5-4 going into halftime.

The Majors tied it up with goal number five to start off the second half. Sophomore Holin Axley, assisted junior Patrick Ammons late in the third quarter to steel the lead once again. After another goal by the Majors, Axley assisted, junior Sumner Gantz to put the Lions back on top. Within the first ten second of the fourth quarter the Majors evened the score at seven. Carter struck a second time to put the Lions up by one. The Majors responded yet again to tie it up for the sixth time. Then sophomore Branson Mickell hammered a long shot into the back of the net. The Lions finished off the Majors with two more goals from Green, and another from junior Spencer Ortiz to win the game 12-10.

Although the Lions got off to a slow start, they were still victorious at the end of the day: “We played really sloppy. I feel like we could have beat them by a lot more, but the fact that we still got the victory at home is a good feeling,” said Axley.

“You gotta feel happy about a win. They all count the same whether its by 2 or 22,” said Head Coach Pete Manderano.
