Lake Burton
One of the main pulls of the area surrounding Demorest is the hiking scene. What often goes under the radar, however, is the bodies of water – most notably Lake Burton. With plenty of Airbnb rentals around the lake, it is a perfect spot for a relaxed spring break.
Burton is in Rabun County, specifically near Tiger, and only 45 minutes away from Demorest. The lake itself is beautiful, not to mention the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding it. A lot of students might want the Panama City, upbeat type of break, but if classes are stressful or if a simple getaway is in order, Burton is great.
There are a decent number of fairly priced rentals on Vrbo or Airbnb, with many under $200 per night with great views – most are priced on a five-day basis.
Northeast Georgia’s beautiful landscape is encapsulated by Lake Burton and the surrounding areas in Rabun County – and it is a great spot for a calm spring break.
On Campus
Some call it “Demvegas” for a reason. It is like Las Vegas, except the opposite. The advantage is the cost. According to College Journey, only 34% of college students have more than $1,000 in their bank accounts, while Lending Tree reports that the average college senior spends $760 on a spring break trip.
Why break the bank when there is a beach built into the Piedmont Village? If you want some sand and sun, just head on over to the volleyball courts in front of the village. It is the much cheaper option with plenty of familiar people hanging around, particularly spring-season athletes.
Free food at the cafeteria, no renting an Airbnb, and no chaos of travel make Demorest the simplest option for your spring break
Wilmington, North Carolina

Many college students rush to the southern beaches to meet up with just about every other college student in the country. If you are seeking something a little quieter with plenty to do, then Wilmington, N.C, may be the beach for you.
The peaceful environment within the city makes it easy to walk everywhere and experience lots of local shopping and dining. The history that the city carries also provides plenty of activities. The most popular tour is the USS North Carolina tour. This ship sits in the Cape Fear River and is a retired World War II battleship open to the public for tours. Even if a person decides not to pay for the tour, the view of the ship from the outside is marvelous.
The area also features locations that fit the college experience a little better. The city itself has over 20 unique breweries for students over the age of 21, along with bars along the river and even on boats.
Just outside the city, you can find three popular beaches. At the northern end is Wrightsville Beach, known for its waters, which are great for surfing. A little further down the coast is Carolina Beach State Park, which has an old boardwalk and is typically more crowded and lively. Below that is Kure Beach, built for family fun and quieter scenes.
It may not be people’s first option, but anyone looking for a casual beach trip for spring break will likely enjoy Wilmington, N.C.
