After years of construction, the reconstruction of Hazel Creek Bridge on Old 411, located just off the campus of Piedmont University, is inching closer to completion.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced in 2023 the reconstruction of the outdated bridge to improve traffic flow. After almost a year spent clearing surrounding land and moving sewer systems and utility lines, the bridge is only 33% complete, according to Now Habersham. The state department claims the bridge will be completed at the end of April 2026.
Stage two of the rebuild began Oct. 2, resulting in a traffic shift. From lane closures to shifting lanes and a reduced speed from 35 mph to 25 mph, the traffic has been undeniable. Currently, traffic has moved to the east side of the newly paved section of the bridge to complete the remaining road.
The Hazel Creek Bridge plans for bigger changes once completed. According to Access WDUN, the state department said the bridge will consist of two 12-foot lanes and a 14-foot center lane. Along with the expansion of the road, 5-foot-wide sidewalks will be added over the quarter mile of the new bridge.
