Women’s Soccer
The Piedmont University women’s soccer team showed an exceptional 2025 season filled with teamwork and composure in high-pressure moments.
The Lady Lions finished off the regular season with a 15-4 (6-2) overall record with an incredible 10-game winning streak that solidified their spot as one of the top programs in the CCS. The team then advanced through the first round of the conference tournament with a 0–0 draw against LaGrange College, winning in penalty kicks before being defeated by Belhaven University in the semifinals.
Head coach of the Lady Lions Timmy McCormack formed a system of balance and resilience that was brought to the front line. The defensive side, led by senior defender Peyton Gates and goalkeeper Hannah Thompson, was one of the most dependable in the region, constantly shutting down opposing attacks and maintaining a clean sheet. Two freshman players came into the spotlight – Addie Cissell and Keira Ferrera. The duo began carving out roles on the team and leaving a spot for future seasons to come.
There were four conference awards obtained by the Lions. Senior Maggie Leger won CCS Goalkeeper of the Year honors, senior Sierra Judson was named All-Conference first team and seniors Savannah Jerome and Peyton Gates were named second team.
The senior class set a tone of professionalism that will be carried on through all seasons to come. As the program looks into the future, the foundation remains at an all-time high and the returning underclassmen will now take on the roles as leaders, aiming to push for a conference championship in 2026.
Men’s Soccer
The 2025 season for Piedmont University’s men’s soccer team was one for growth as the Lions continued toward long-term success.
The Lions completed the regular season with a 6–8–1 overall record, concluding with a 4–2 win over Belhaven University that showed their determination, however falling short to Covenant in a penalty kick in the playoffs. Piedmont scored 30 total goals while allowing 35, averaging 2.0 goals per game offensively and conceding 2.3 per game on defense.
The Lions were led by senior leadership at the goal with goalkeepers Collin Sheeler and Bobby Wood throughout the season. Sheeler recorded 41 saves with a 0.694 save percentage, while Wood had 22 saves of his own. On the back line, freshman Josh Duquette led the defensive unit, providing physical strength.
“We had a rough start to our season and lost a couple of games we should have won”, said senior goalkeeper Collin Sheeler. “When it mattered, we showed up and put our heart for the game out there and left it on the field. Even though Covenant was a loss, it was filled with passion and lion pride.”
Looking ahead at the 2026 season, head coach Jimmy Stephens will look to strengthen the team’s ability to attack under pressure during 90 minutes on the field. The underclassmen coming up have shown insight into trustworthy starters for seasons ahead, as the Lions strive to climb the conference standings and become more competitive.
