With this semester getting into full swing and the bustling of the new year catching pace, I think that it is important to discuss the real changes that have been made around campus. In the new “Be a Lion, not a Number” campaign, I believe that the Piedmont admissions team has captured the pure essence of the quaint liberal arts education experience perfectly.
While it has a nice ring to it, “Be a Lion, Not a Number” is more than just a catchy phrase. This campaign is truly a call to encourage our individuality as not just students but students of Piedmont. In a country full of large research-driven universities where students are commonly viewed as insignificant parts of the whole, it is refreshing to see a University be so committed to making students feel seen.
On campus, it is common to hear that most students and faculty alike love the “family atmosphere” that can be found all around. Whether in the classroom, on a field, or just walking the halls, it is clear that being a lion and a stranger at the same time is hard. With an approximate 10:1 student-to-professor ratio, it is nearly impossible to fly under the radar whether you would like to or not.
Because of this fact, I think this campaign seamlessly reflects the true culture here at Piedmont. Unlike some big universities, Piedmont offers an atmosphere where students can easily build true connections with each other and their faculty. This is a place where each student matters not just as one of many but as one of a kind.
I think that utilizing just a few of the beautiful faces of our student body was an ingenious way of providing an outsider with a glimpse of campus life. Regardless of how you feel about Piedmont as a whole, I think we can all agree that in a small place, everyone gets to know everyone, and with that comes building a pretty strong community to celebrate each other.
As this semester continues, I hope that students and faculty will embrace this new initiative and take it as an opportunity to support each other and take advantage of some of the unique opportunities that come with being a Lion.
