Piedmont College’s softball team is expecting to have a very successful 2014 season. Last season, the softball team was 19-3 in conference and 34-10 overall. This explosive season placed them second in the regional tournament as well as ranked 15th in the nation. Senior pitcher Brittney Head is expecting nothing less with the upcoming season.
“I expect everyone to play to their best ability and be a great teammate on and off the field. Our goal as a team is to make a regional again this year and go further than we have ever gone,” said Head.
Brittany Head finished the 2013 season with a record of 14-6 and a 2.29 ERA. This very successful season lead her to achieve a first team USA South All-Conference selection, as well as a NFCA Division III All-region Third Team Selection.
Freshman infielder Jessica Perschka is also looking forward to this year’s season.
“After the first week of practice, we look pretty solid for the most part. We are hitting the ball hard in the cages and we had a great first day of fielding having just come back from a long break. I hope we can continue to improve to be the best we can be and go further than where the team ended up last year,” said Perschka.
Head said, “It’s been a great first week of practice but it’s been way too cold to get on the field much. We are all very excited to get the season going, and for warmer weather.”
Last season, Olivia Duncan had the highest batting average and is returning to the field as a sophomore. Other stat leaders include junior Abby Atkinson, sophomore Jordin Ellingson and Head.
The first two games of the season are against Birmingham Southern College Feb. 15. Both games will be held at Piedmont College.
