The Piedmont College Lady Lions completed a weekend sweep with a 63- 55 victory on Sunday, Jan. 20 over the visiting Averett Uni- versity Cougars.
Averett started out strong, capitalizing on 12 first half points from Mette Schelman and carried a 36-33 lead into the half time intermission.
After an opening second half basket by Averett, the Lady Lions embarked on an 8-0 run to take the lead, 41-38.
Throughout the game, the two teams would swap the lead 10 times.
However, with the score tied 50-50 with 11:20 left to play, Piedmont would take control of the game.For the remainder of the contest, the Lady Lions stifled the Averett offense, holding them to just 5 points the rest of the game.
Over the course of the next ten minutes, the Lady Lions went on an 11-3 scoring run, putting their lead at 61-53 with only two minutes remaining on the clock.
The Lady Lions were led in scoring by senior Lauren Anderson, who contributed 20 points to the Lady Lions score.
Half of her points were earned from success behind the free throw line.
Anderson also led the team with 9 rebounds, leaving her oneshyofherfourthdouble- double of the season.
Junior Lauren Hamel also added double digit points to
the Lady Lions total, scoring 12 points in the contest.
Senior Kiki Thompson also had a strong game, scoring 9 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, earning 5 assists and making 6 steals.
The Lady Lions dominated the Cougars in the paint, out- scoring Averett 24-12.
The victory moved the Lady Lions to 8-7 on the sea- son overall, and 4-5 in the USA conference.
This game marked an end to a seven game USA South home-stand. The Lady Lions traveled to both Greensboro College and Methodist Uni- versity over the weekend.
Piedmont lost to both teamsontheroad.
The Lady Lions return to the court Feb. 2 at home against NC Wesleyan College.
