Sports journalism and pop culture happenings are the main pursuit of Barstool Sports, aside from comedy of course. Other institutions and universities have invented their own twists on the viral content created by David Portnoy, and now Piedmont is added to that list.
The Piedmont University Barstool Instagram account dropped their first post on Dec. 6th, 2023 and ever since then, the mountain of memes continues. From funny athletic event highlights to campus WIFI disses and the “Almost Friday” feature, this account is hitting all the Piedmont athletics and meme content with a dash of positivity.
Incorporating weekly Yik Yak highlights, a special Valentine posting including Piedmont athletes with puns for Valentines and celebratory digital culture in favor of the winning Lions from the week, you can’t find this amusing scoop anywhere else in Demorest. The postings are frequent, varied between stills and video and relatable to the Lions student body. Although the account is not affiliated with Barstool Sports or Piedmont University, it has definitely shaken up the social scene at the small DIII liberal arts university that is Piedmont.
With the account evolving and maturing to earn more chatter across campus, there is just one question on everyone’s mind. How did they get the “Almost Friday” graphic so perfect on the first try? Just kidding. The question is who is behind this creative craft?
Senior Amanda Price said, “I think it has to be a sophomore on men’s lacrosse because they’ll be here long enough to have Barstool in the next couple of years but they’re also young enough to start it. I think it’s Isaac Harrington. I just know it’s men’s lacrosse,” said Price.
Junior Hollan Rabensdorf said, “I think it’s a girl solely because I feel like girls care more about social media. I think they have more of a social media presence.”
The rumors are accumulating and it’s hard to keep secrets on such a small campus. The majority of followers of the account have an inkling on the person trending behind the Barstool logo. Numbers are growing rapidly with the account inching closer to 700 followers after only being active for three short months. The sensation has swept students and the incognito operator continues to linger behind every post.
“I have two or three theories,” said senior Silas Sandles. “The first one is a freshman lacrosse player. I think it’s one of them because there’s been a multitude of posts regarding Piedmont men’s lacrosse.”
Graduate student Connor Rogers said, “I think it’s an athlete that runs it. They post a lot of sports things and not so much all the other things around campus.”
Although no one has seemed to figure it out, the owner of the Piedmont Barstool account said, “it has been a lot of fun so far and I enjoy bringing people together through humor and funny content.”
Politely requesting anonymity, the mystery continues and so will the content.
