Recently, Piedmont College hired a new Disability Support Coordinator and Student Success Coach, Dr. Sue Smith. Smith started here at Piedmont just two weeks before the fall 2019 semester began. She had to take on many caseloads of students ranging from freshmen to seniors. Although this is the first time Smith has worked at a college, she has been working within the realm of special education since she graduated college.
Smith graduated from Piedmont College with a degree in psychology in 1978. After graduating from Piedmont, she went to the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega, Georgia, and graduated from there with a master’s degree in special education. After receiving her master’s, Smith began teaching special education at East Hall High School where she taught for 14 years. After 14 years of teaching, she became an administrator in the special education department and was a special education coordinator. She retired from the Hall County School System for about five years before she came to Piedmont.
During retirement, Smith was the primary caregiver for her mother and brother. She says, “They are doing much better now and I am happy to be back at work.” She was happy to see the opening for the Disability Support Coordinator position here at Piedmont, and thinks it is a job she will excel at and thoroughly enjoy.
She is thankful for everyone at Piedmont being so kind and very helpful as she takes on this new job. She also said she loves how the faculty has been very receptive to students with disabilities and their accommodations.
Smith has lived in Demorest, Georgia, all of her life and has loved every second of it. She has a loving husband, son and two grandsons that keep her busy when she is not working or helping at her home church.
