Piedmont College was awarded the USA South Overall President’s Cup and Women’s President’s Cup for the 2017-2018 athletic season. This is the second year in a row Piedmont has won President’s Cups both in the overall and men’s categories.
The President’s Cups are awarded on a point system, based on how well each team finishes in the regular season as well as their postseason performance. The President’s Cups are split into three categories: men’s, women’s and overall, which combines the men’s and women’s standings.
The Lady Lions’ soccer and tennis teams played a huge role in winning the cups. The women’s soccer team won the USA South regular season championship and finished the season unbeaten, while the women’s tennis team also won the USA South regular season championship.
The women’s basketball team and women’s lacrosse teams also garnered additional points for the women’s and overall standings based on their postseason performances. The Lady Lions basketball team won the USA South Tournament Championship and earned an automatic bid for the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament for the second straight season. The Lady Lions lacrosse team made it all the way to the championship game in the 2018 USA South Tournament, before ultimately losing to Meredith College.
The Lions’ baseball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, softball, volleyball, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and men’s tennis teams also earned points for Piedmont by finishing top-three in the regular season USA South standings.
The Lions now have six USA South President’s Cups total in the women’s and overall categories. Piedmont has never won a USA South Men’s President Cup.
Piedmont begins the chase for a third-straight overall and women’s President’s Cups this weekend when volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s cross country begin their 2018 campaigns.
