Midday on Tues., Oct. 6, the Piedmont College women’s soccer team played the visiting Scots of Maryville College in Demorest. Surrendering their first tie, the Lions battled to a draw with a final score of 0-0, making their overall record to 13-1-1.
“The Maryville women’s team has always been a tough game for us, and I’m happy that even with the injuries and the referees’ bad calls, we still got a tie. It was a pretty even game for the most part,” said second-year midfielder Mollie Leeuwenburg.
The Lions and the Scots fought hard against one another for the first half, both producing shots on goal. Fourth-year Goalkeeper Michaela Gardner had a season-high nine saves in the goal for Piedmont with her eighth solo shutout of the season to lower her goals against average to 0.31 on the year.
In the first seven minutes of the game, third-year midfielder Morgan Edelman was tackled by one of the Scots. After receiving a free kick, Edelman noticed something wrong with her wrist. Matt McKinney, Piedmont’s head athletic trainer, rushed to the field. After calming her down, she was taken to the hospital for treatment of a broken wrist.
In the second half, both teams remained scoreless, moving the ball back and forth across the field without finishing any of the numerous shots on goal. After two scoreless halves, the Lady Lions and their rivals faced overtime play. In this ten-minute period, both teams still could not get the ball in the back of the net. From then, they went into double overtime of another ten-minute faceoff.

First-year forward Cassidy Reich had four of Piedmont’s nine shots in the contest.
“It was a really hard game without Edelman in the central midfield because she wins the majority of our headers, but our midfield pulled it together to seal a tie,” said third-year defender Marissa Akin.
The Lions travel to Lagrange, Ga. to play Lagrange College on Oct. 17. Kickoff starts at 2 p.m..
“I can’t wait to see what the rest of our season holds for us. I really think that our team can make it far beyond the conference tournament,” said second-year defender Abbey Dunlop.
