Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team had a perfect week, shutting out its three opponents by a combined score of 9-0 with a 4-0 win against Wesleyan College, a 2-0 win at Huntingdon College and a 3-0 win against Johnson and Wales University.
The victories marked a first for senior goalkeeper Hannah Thompson, who actually scored her first career goal against Wesleyan on a penalty kick to put the Lions up 2-0.
“Scoring my first goal was really exciting,” Thompson said. “Typically, I’m doing the opposite of scoring goals when I’m on the field, so being able to score was a new, really exciting feeling.”
Senior midfielder Savannah Jerome opened the scoring against Wesleyan with a goal at 16:30 (assist by junior Taylor Crawford). Freshman Megan Gates (assisted by freshman Jordyn Harris) made it 3-0 in the second half, and during the final minutes of the game, Piedmont would make another goal by freshman Genesis Gamez — her first career goal as well — set up by senior Sophie Wells. Senior Maggie Leger, Thompson and junior Cameron Southard combined for the shutout in goal.
On Oct. 3, the team headed to Montgomery, Alabama, and defeated conference foe Huntingdon 2-0. Senior Sierra Judson (assist by junior Adriana Blumer) opened the scoring at 8:17, and Crawford followed with a goal at 14:57 (assist by senior Paige Kluba). That’s all the scoring the Lions needed, as Leger and Thompson again combined for the shutout.
The Lady Lions returned home on Oct. 5 winning against Johnson and Wales 3-0. Freshman Lora Kim started the scoring for Piedmont, earning her first career goal at 11:38. In the second half of the game, Wells would make Piedmont’s second score with a PK sent to the left side of the net. To finalize the scoring, Judson scored just before the end of the game (assist by sophomore Madison Johnson and senior Peyton Gates),
The victories bring Piedmont’s record to 10-4, 2-2 in the CCS. The Lady Lions will be back on the road playing LaGrange on Oct. 8.

Men’s Soccer
The Piedmont men’s soccer team split its two conference games last week, losing 2-0 at Covenant College, then bouncing back for a 2-1 win against Asbury University on Oct. 4.
In the loss, Covenant stymied the Lions’ offensive attack, as Piedmont generated 11 shots to the Scots’ 21. After heading into halftime with a scoreless tie, Covenant came out and scored two goals for the win.
“On Wednesday (against Covenant), we played a much more physical team with a clear attack plan against us. And we lacked energy and possession against them,” said sophomore forward Juliann Pimental.
The Lions got on the board early against Asbury, with senior Mason Keith scoring an unassisted goal at 12:16. Senior Mohammed Alsuweyd added to the lead just before halftime, with a goal at 41:01 (assist by senior Colin Vogel and freshman Noah Goodman. Senior goalkeeper Bobby Wood had four saves.
“The loss on Wednesday was a wake-up call for us, which allowed us to change our game plan for Saturday and gave us confidence moving forward in our other conference games,” Pimental said.
“I wouldn’t change anything in the past two games because I believe that in life, you learn more from your failures than you do from your victories,” Pimentel said. “And we as a team saw we had to make a positive change, and we did.“
The Lions (5-5, 1-2) will head to Berry College for a non-conference game on Oct. 13.

Volleyball
The Piedmont volleyball team won two out of the three conference games they hosted on Oct. 1-4. The Lions were victorious over Wesleyan College with a score of 3-1. They then fell short against Covenant College with a score of 3-1 and lost 3-0 to Lagrange College.
“Winning a set against Covenant was a big moment for us,” sophomore Sara Bjerke said. “We were all proud of ourselves for fighting back while down 2-0 to get the chance at a fourth set. A big change that made a difference during our match against Covenant was self-control. We’ve been working a lot in practice on ‘controlling what we can control,’ and I believe we did better following through with that against Covenant.”
Over the three matches, Bjerke tallied 10 blocks and a .313 hitting percentage against Wesleyan College, the highest of any player in the match. Senior Kaite Hubbard led the team with 27 kills, four blocks and 11 digs. Senior Zoe Coelho also stood out, serving three aces, 69 digs, 11 assists and a hitting percentage of .667 against LaGrange College. Freshman Lauren Caricato tallied 29 assists and posted a .500 hitting percentage against Covenant College. Senior Kya Perkinson tallied 10 kills and one block. Senior Alex Wingate had 11 kills. Senior Abbye Carver tallied six aces. Sophomore Bailey Daughtery gained six blocks. Sophomore Erin Lemons tallied 42 assists.
The Lions (3-13, 1-4) will host Agnes Scott College on Oct. 7 for their next conference game.

Men’s Swimming

The Piedmont University men’s swimming team opened the 2025–26 season with an impressive 192–54 victory over Columbia College on Saturday afternoon at Tallulah Falls. The meet also served as a celebration of the Lions’ historic 2024–25 season, when the program captured its first Independent South Swimming Conference Championship title.
Head coach Teddy Guyer’s squad showed early-season depth and energy, claiming 11 individual wins and two relay victories. The Lions swept the 200-medley relay, taking the top three spots. The first-place team—Reid Barnes, Ryan Smith, Brady Bowman and Henry Rickman—set the tone for the meet and led Piedmont’s dominant start. Freshman Brady Bowman was a breakout performer in his collegiate debut, earning three individual wins in the 50 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM. Senior Perry Westbrook powered through distance events, securing victories in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, winning the latter by more than 30 seconds over teammate Carmen Yeager. Junior Ryan Smith continued his momentum from last season, claiming titles in the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
“I was really proud of how my team and I performed this meet,” Smith said. “We have all been training hard leading up to the season, so I am glad it is paying off. I am excited to see where my progress and training will lead me by midseason and conference.”
Other event winners included Baden Stewart in the 50 freestyle, Henry Rickman in the 100 freestyle, and Preston Allen in the 50 butterfly.
The Lions will return to action Oct. 10, hosting Warren Wilson College at 6 p.m. as they look to continue their winning momentum.
