Women’s Volleyball
Piedmont’s women’s volleyball started the season off in a slump. After an eight-game losing streak, the Lady Lions defeated Columbia College (S.C.) to take home their first win of the season. New head coach Kat Tatum much anticipated this.
“The first win was special, but not just because of the score,” said head coach Kat Tatum. “It was about watching our players compete for each other and trust the system we’re building. It gave us a glimpse of what this program can look like when we’re aligned and connected.”
The Lions look to score their first conference win this weekend. On Saturday, they will face Belhaven University (Miss.) and Maryville College. The Lions are 1-9 on the season, with over 20 matches left to play.
Women’s Soccer
Piedmont women’s soccer started off the season with a stretch of games on the road – The first ten of 11 games were away. The Lions have done well on the road by winning five games.
“The team has faced a bevy of challenges to start the season, including playing ten of our first 11 games on the road, a stretch we are right in the middle of now in the schedule,” said head coach Timmy McCormack. “However, they have shown grit and determination in the face of adversity, which bodes well for how they will do down the stretch of the season.”
The Lions will travel to Mississippi to face a conference opponent when they play Belhaven. Only one conference game has been played against Maryville College, and the Lions fell 1-2.
Men’s Soccer
Piedmont’s men’s soccer start to the season came with battles. The Lions dropped the first game 1-4. The second game faced weather challenges. The Owls of Warren Wilson College traveled to Demorest only to have the game halted in the second half with a tie of 3-3. This game was resumed on Sept. 19, and the Lions pulled off the win 4-3.
The Lions are overall 4-3, demonstrating their dominance at home by losing only one game at the Walker Athletic Complex. Conference play has arrived for the Lions – they are set to face four straight CCS teams in the next two weeks. The Lions will travel to Maryville College to face the Scots this Saturday, marking the start of conference play.
