The month-long German tradition of Oktoberfest is back in Helen, Georgia and is celebrating its 55th anniversary with people visiting from all over the country and coming together to celebrate while wearing some fancy German attire.
Oktoberfest is a German festival renowned for its beer. It originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig.
Helen’s own version is held every year in the fall, with this year’s festival taking place from Sept. 4 to Nov. 2 at the Helen Festhalle, which is just a short walk from downtown Helen.
One big draw of the festival is the food, which includes traditional fare like brats, sauerkraut, pretzels and beer.
The fun doesn’t end with the food and beer. This festival includes live music and is a family-friendly event.
Many attendees wear their best German-inspired attire, such as traditional lederhosen, but dressing up is not required.
In addition to the festival, bowling, river tubing, mini golf, zipline courses and Unicoi State Park are available in or near Helen for endless adventures for the under-21 crowd.
The food menu, pricing and band schedule are available on the Helen Chamber of Commerce website, along with any changing information and additional festivals following Oktoberfest.
