Four years ago, I made the decision to pack up and go to school in Georgia. I knew no one or what I was getting myself into. That decision led me to creating so many beautiful relationships that I will always cherish. Even more, through Piedmont I was able to understand who I was as a person. I am forever indebted to Piedmont as it has given me friends for life and memories I will never forget.
Joining the Roar felt like finding my family. The Roar created a welcoming atmosphere for aspiring journalists, editors and designers to share ideas with the community. It was an opportunity to get a taste of what the real world is like with creative brainstorms, investigative journalism and meeting hard deadlines. Without the Roar, I would not have been able to read great journalism that helped me develop my own writing.
I will miss everything about Piedmont from the loud noises of Shooks in the morning to hoping for snow days and doom scrolling on YikYak. I am forever grateful that Piedmont was the choice I made four years ago.

My four years at Piedmont University truly flew by in the blink of an eye. Piedmont became my second home and I’ve cherished every moment spent with my friends, classmates and professors. I never imagined I’d be part of a collegiate swim team, but that changed real quick. I had the honor of helping the men’s team win two conference championships, and I’m proud to be the first swimmer in Piedmont history to be named Swimmer of the Year. It’s just amazing being part of that team.
Writing stories for the Roar that matter to us and sharing them with friends and others has been so rewarding. It’s surreal to know our voices are being heard. I’m deeply grateful for the trust placed in me as an editor and for the chance to tell and edit meaningful stories. Being featured in the paper and on social media, it’s amazing to feel like my journey is being shared with others. Thank you to everyone who made this chapter of my life so unforgettable.
As I prepare to leave Piedmont, I need to say, time flies when you’re having fun. Thank you Piedmont.

I want to thank my incredible family in the Mass Communications department. Dr. Dennis, thank you for being my Piedmont Dad—my support through tears and accomplishments. You were the first to truly see me not just an undocumented student but a human being. Your encouragement helped me share my story through an article and a documentary. Professor Hudgens, my Piedmont Mom, thank you for the snacks, laughs, Band-Aids and heartfelt advice. Professor Jackson, thank you for being my Piedmont aunt, guiding me through countless film projects. Dr. Moss, my Piedmont Grandma, thank you for helping me find my confidence on stage. Professor McCormick, my Piedmont Tio [Uncle], thank you for the wild stories, film advice and career guidance. DVC, my Piedmont Grandfather, thank you for pushing me to be strong and professional—with Tootsie Rolls, encouragement and wisdom. You’ve all shown me that even an undocumented student can dream, achieve and thrive.
To my fellow students, thank you for the memories, laughs and chaotic joy in the office. I’ll miss being the Swanson Squatter in Joe’s office. This isn’t goodbye since I’m not far, so instead I’ll say: see you next time.

Alexis Baumgardner, Social Media Manager
My time at Piedmont has been some of the best years of my life. Walking into the Swanson Center for the first time was nerve-racking for someone who has never been the most comfortable with trying new things, but that changed quickly. From the moment I stepped in, I was welcomed by professors who believed in me and classmates who quickly became friends.
Over the years, I have grown into someone I am proud of. I have stepped far outside my comfort zone, producing live radio shows and podcast episodes, creating video and photo content and writing articles for The Roar. Each opportunity has helped me find my voice and build confidence in my creativity. Though I have only been part of The Roar staff for a short time, it has given me lifelong friendships and the chance to tell stories that matter.
I am incredibly thankful for the support of my professors who pushed me to grow, the friends who turned into family and most importantly the love and encouragement from my family who supported me through it all. Piedmont has given me more than just a degree—it gave me unforgettable memories, incredible experiences, mentors and a future I am excited for.

If you had told high school senior Lainey that in three years she would be graduating from Piedmont University with a degree in mass communications, she would have laughed in your face. First, because we all know college is supposed to take four years. But also because I didn’t even truly know what mass comm was back then.
Even though life looks a little different than I expected, I could not be happier with where I am, who I have met and what I have learned. Piedmont has taught me so many things that I will cherish forever. It has taught me about community, independence and education, but most importantly, it has helped me learn more about who I am and who I want to be. I have gained skills I will carry with me for the rest of my life and met people I couldn’t imagine life without.
In the end, I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had here at the Mont for anything! Thank you, Piedmont!
