Baseball
The Piedmont baseball team has had a successful conference season so far, earning numerous wins. The Lions have a conference matchup against Maryville ahead. Recently, they defeated Oglethorpe with a final score of 11-5. With the success the team has had, the Lions have a chance of being a high seed for the playoffs. The Lions are currently in second place in the conference standings. With these upcoming games, the Lions are looking to continue their success on the field. Hopefully, they will take this momentum and bring it to the conference to win this year. Conference play will begin April 30.
Softball
The Piedmont softball team is in the mix of one of the toughest conferences. In third place, the Lions (10-4) trail Huntingdon (13-1) and Belhaven (12-2) at the top of the CCS. With a 23-15 overall record, Piedmont has taken down tough opponents, among them three were nationally ranked, both within and outside of the conference. The team has locked in the three seed for the tournament, with their opponent pending the final few games. The playoffs will begin April 30.
Men’s Golf
With the Men’s Golf team winning the conference last year and a guaranteed bid to nationals this year if they win, the CCS conference is in their sights again. With new freshmen, the team is working hard in order to do well in the conference championship this year. At the Cochran Collegiate, the last event of the regular season, the Lions placed ninth out of 18 teams, shooting a 308 in the final round.
Junior Adam Roger, who made the CCS All-Tournament Team last season, wants to take the team to win the conference again.
“Focusing on my process before each shot is the most important piece of playing well, especially in the postseason,” said Rogers. “This season, I’ve been trying to maintain my expectations and to keep a good attitude.”
Men’s golf will play at Dalton Country Club in Dalton, Georgia April 28 for the CCS Championship.
Women’s Golf
The women’s golf team finished their season strong with a first-place finish in the Greenbrier Invitational. Leading the way for the Lady Lions was second-place finisher Erin Donovan, shooting one under par over the course of two rounds. Donovan, reigning USA South player of the year and conference champion, will look to repeat her performance from last year to help the Lady Lions to a championship.
The team’s preconference rankings seed them in fourth, just behind Southern Virginia with Methodist projected in the one seed. The first round of the USA South Championship will start on April 28 in Spartanburg, SC at Carolina Country Club.
Men’s Lacrosse
Piedmont Men’s lacrosse is currently ranked second in the conference for the playoffs. The Lions, overall, have done well in USA South conference play to secure the second seed. Pfieffer secured the one seed.
With the second seed secured, the lions have obtained a bye in the first round and will play in the Semifinals May 1 at Pfieffer versus the winner of the William Peace and Methodist contest. Currently the Lions record is 7-1 in conference play.
Women’s Lacrosse
After a thrilling win against Methodist, the Piedmont women’s lacrosse team has locked up the second seed. With an 8-1 conference record, the Lions will start playoffs playing Huntingdon College April 26. Meredith College will host the tournament as the regular season champions, while defending their title for the 10th straight season.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s tennis team has had a very tough season this year with many close matches. In conference rankings this year, the Lions are ranked third in the conference. With these difficult matches they have had to face, it gave their season determination and growth. With a mix of new freshmen and many captains, the team has shown a strong fight in singles and doubles. These matches have built trust between the team with each other.
“Playoffs is going to be different from the rest of the matches we’ve had this year due to the stakes and our goals,” said freshman Amir Latipov. “We have talked all year about peaking at the right moment and I think we are setting up to do just that.”
Even with these losses, they hope to take this momentum to the spring playoffs to win the conference this year.
Women’s Tennis
Since the beginning of the CCS era, the women’s tennis team has not lost a conference match. This season, the Lady Lions extended their all-time record to 21-0 against interconference CCS foes. The back-to-back reigning champions have a chance to three-peat entering the conference tournament as the overwhelming favorites. After a week and a half of rest time, the team will travel to the Chattanooga Champions Club on April 24 to try to handle business in the CCS once again.
Men’s Track and Field
The men’s track and field team has done exceptionally well this season, getting new pr’s and breaking records for Piedmont. The team has had many people win CCS Conference of the South weekly awards as well. The men’s team last year won the conference championship, and are hoping to bring another conference win. Currently, they are ranked 6th in the conference. The men’s team is definitely going to have to work hard in order to do well in the playoffs this year.
Women’s Track and Field
The women’s track and field team ended last year in slightly disappointing fashion, finishing in second place behind Berea for the CCS Championship. With Berea out of the picture, the Lions look to bring the title back to Demorest. Piedmont had their best meet this season in the Electric City Invitational at Anderson University, finishing first among division three teams, and 10th of 22 teams overall. After two weeks off, the team will start its championship run at Maryville College on April 23.
