Minecraft officially released as a video game in 2011, and in what has sparked the weirdest theater experience since “Minions: The Rise of Gru” in 2022, “A Minecraft Movie,” starring Jack Black brings a humorous spin on one of the most popular video games of all time. However, there are a lot of issues.
The film’s main character is Steve – a man who, as quoted in the movie, always had “yearned for the mines.” The other characters include “Garrett the Garbage Man,” a former video game star, siblings Natalie and Henry who start a new life in Idaho and Dawn, a real estate agent and animal lover.
Besides the random humor found throughout the film and cartoony CGI, the movie is inaccurate and looks low budget – but that is the point. An imaginative game needs an imaginative design, which is meant for children and families to enjoy together. Although players who enjoyed the more “original” Minecraft game might not like the frequent inaccuracies found in the movie, it still does its job – be funny.
Theater workers are now deathly afraid of the phrase “chicken jockey.” Social media brought numerous lines from the original trailer to light and has many fans quoting them frequently.
A trend for many moviegoers who watch “A Minecraft Movie” is to scream and throw buckets of popcorn after Jack Black addresses a baby zombie on top of a chicken. The incidents have sparked news segments, countless audience videos have been released and theater owners are furious.
“A Minecraft Movie” is good for laughs and not much else. Jennifer Coolidge even makes appearances for a side plot where she dates a Villager. The craziness of the plot, cast and even a few musical numbers from Jack Black are hilarious, but for those who want to see a traditional and true Minecraft experience, this movie is not it.
Though it may be extremely funny at times, “A Minecraft Movie” is strictly meant for kids. It received a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, but some were excited to see the post-credit scene which hinted at a possible sequel.
One thing remains true about the movie – its popularity. It boasts a $157 million opening and created a gigantic buzz around social media. While it is not the highest quality film ever created, “A Minecraft Movie” is memorable, but maybe for the wrong reasons.
