The movie We Live in Time, directed by John Crowley, is an amazing story about the struggles of marriage and love. It follows the story of a young couple in England, how they met, and how their love story takes off.
Andrew Garfield as Tobias and Florence Pugh as Almut masterfully play the young couple in the film. It is so captivating getting to watch people fall in love, but funny scenes and the sweet moments during the movie make it better. This film was captivating as a young person, offering a valuable lesson to not take life for granted. Its sentimental and sweet tones capture the value of commitment and relationships.
The movie opens with Almut being diagnosed with cancer. She then talks to her partner, Tobias to decide on a difficult decision — a happy last six months together or going through the straining process of chemotherapy, with the very real possibility that the cancer will not go away.
The movie moves through a timeline of scenes, sometimes moving to different parts of the couple’s life at different times. The movie jumps to a different time, and Almut’s cancer is still there. Almut then decides to join a cooking competition for the last time since her cancer came back. She keeps this decision a secret from Tobias to keep the peace between them. After that the movie moves back to the early days of the couple, when they first met in person. This is where Almut accidentally hits Tobias with her car. Then the couple gets to know each other and discovers that Almut already had cancer once before.
They decide that together, they probably won’t have kids in their lifetime. Eventually, the viewer finds out that they did have one kid because the movie jumps to a different scene where Almut finds out she is pregnant. I think they did this jumbled-up version of showing different parts at different times to make the movie unique. I like how they showed this version due to the fact that it shows their love at every second of the movie. I think that makes it so special and makes the viewer fall in love with this movie. It shows the most important times of the couple’s life to the audience and how special they treated each moment together. It shows an emotional and raw state of the couple’s experience in life, but also how other couples can relate to this, too.
Andrew Garfield’s acting was strong, as he was able to show sadness and anger throughout the movie. Both actors also just had an amazing chemistry together, which is important for a movie like this. I just love the acting that both of these actors displayed throughout the movie. Sometimes, in the middle of the film, you can see the couple becoming frustrated with each other.
Couples can relate to the anger that Almut and Tobias feel during the film. But no one also has never had to go through two different cancers, a romantic love story, baby and a death all in one lifetime. This movie makes the realize that one day I will actually find the one who loves me for who I am. It also helps me see how to be treated and what to accept in a relationship. I also need to be patient and loving in a relationship. This movie was brilliant and had such an amazing story to watch.
