The annual intramural basketball tournament took place every Tuesday and Thursday from Feb. 25 to March 27. Six teams battled for a spot in the championship: Lil Mermaids, Bronnies Brigade, Kool-Aid Jammers, Team Piedmont, Neighborhood Heroes and Men’s Soccer.
In the end, only two teams remained standing for the title: Men’s Soccer and Team Piedmont.
As if the game hit pause and then pressed play, this year’s championship matchup mirrored last year’s, with Men’s Soccer attempting to defend their title and Team Piedmont seeking redemption after last year’s defeat.
On April 15 at 7 p.m. in the Mize Athletic Center, Men’s Soccer and Team Piedmont faced off in the championship game. After the first half, Team Piedmont had a 13-point lead with 28 points, holding Men’s Soccer to just 12 points.
Men’s Soccer coach Silas Mulligan guided his team as well as he could but could not keep up with Team Piedmont’s offense. Team Piedmont led the entire game, with their largest lead coming in the third quarter with the score sitting at 34-22. Despite the best efforts of the Men’s Soccer squad, they continued to fall further behind the eventual champions.
At the end of four quarters, the final score was Team Piedmont 47 and Men’s Soccer 36. Team Piedmont had achieved their redemption arc.
“It’s an awesome feeling!” said Dr. Octavius Mulligan, a key player for Team Piedmont. “The soccer players are really good at their respectable sport, however; they are pretty good on the basketball court as well and I’m just happy that at my old age I can still compete with them.”
The narrative was different last year, and Team Piedmont was thrilled to make a comeback run and win the title of intramural basketball champions.
“I call it sweet revenge. We had a chance to win the game last year and made some mistakes. We didn’t want to do that again this year,” said Dr. Mulligan. This isn’t the end for Team Piedmont, as next year they will have to defend their title in the next intramural basketball tournament.
