Big news hits the athletic department as Athletic Director Jim Peeples announces his resignation from the position he has held for 10 years as he shifts his career goals to the arts.
Peeples recently took the stage in Piedmont Theatre’s production of “9 to 5.” It was there that Peeples discovered his love and talent for theater.
“Performing in ‘9 to 5’ was such an enjoyable experience I thought I should consider more opportunities to perform,” said Peeples. “Theater, movies and television need more older leading men.”
His list of accolades as athletic director is admirable, with 19 USA South Tournament championships, 16 Regular Season Championships, Presidents and Commissioner Cup Titles, as well as navigating the transition from USA South to the Collegiate Conference of the South.
His resignation from the department comes as a shock.
“He is the glue that holds our department together,” said head women’s golf coach Hannah Satterfield. “He has been a great mentor to me as a young coach.”
Despite the athletic department’s loss, Peeples plans to continue in smaller roles through Piedmont Theatre and join a professional theatre group out of Athens later this spring.
“I think his acting career will be successful because of his upbeat personality and ability to empathize with others,” said Satterfield.
As Peeples leaves Piedmont hoping to make the big stage, the athletic department seeks his replacement.
