The Piedmont softball team opened up this season on their home field against Mount St. Joseph University on Feb. 14. The first game of the double header opened up with starting pitcher senior Megan Steinmeyer pitching five innings with one strikeout. Junior infielder Madi Cronic brings in teammates Heartly Nepveux and Jordyn Green to help out on the offensive side of things. The Lady Lions split the opening series 1-1.
The Lady Lions traveled to two classics where they played against multiple schools. Feb. 28, they traveled to Columbus, Georgia for the NFCA Leadoff Classic where they faced teams such as University of Chicago, Pacific Lutheran University and University of Redlands. They left this classic 1-6 before traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina to play in the Diamond Classic. This classic had better match ups with the Lady Lions ending that weekend 3-3.
These classics prepared the Lady Lions to play their first conference series against new foe Asbury University. The Lady Lions hosted the Lady Eagles on Mar. 14 in a double header where Piedmont came out victorious.
“The win over Asbury really set the tone to start our conference and we did not know what to expect,” senior pitcher Megan Steinmeyer said. “We have a really good team this year and the vibes are really high going into conference play!”
The Lady Lions are set to face conference opponents the next couple of weeks which makes the team’s preparation a little different.
Currently, Piedmont softball is 6-0 in conference, with a highlight of Steinmeyer throwing a no-hitter on senior day against Agnes Scott.
“We have had a few solid days of hard practice since Asbury and the team as a whole has been working really hard on what we need to do, to focus on the upcoming games,” Steinmeyer said. “The next few series of games are all conference and so the team as a whole is trying to just stay tunnel visioned on what is most important, and that’s winning every conference game that we can to put us in a good spot.”
