It’s that time again, another rigged Academy Awards night. For those in favor of Wicked, I am so sorry for your multi-million dollar loss on a phenomenal movie that deserved way better than it should.
For those in favor of the now top-five favorite serial killers of the Scream franchise, you are in luck! The movie, “Anora,” starring Mikey Madison, has won five Oscars in a single night.
“Anora” provides us insight into the lifestyle of a stripper named Ani, who later meets up with a man named Ivan or Vanya. The overall take of the movie leaves viewers sympathetic for people like Ani and Vanya. This movie is similar to other Oscar award-winning films such as, “The Shape Of Water.”
Other Oscar awards went to Kiren Cullen for best actor in a supporting role, “Flow” for best animated movie over Pixar’s “Inside and Out 2,” Paul Tazewell won best costume design for the movie “Wicked,” Tazewell won an Oscar as the first black male in costume design and “Emilia Perez” controversially wins best original song.
“The Oscar’s did an overall good job but there were some obvious snubs such as ‘Emilia Perez’ beating ‘Wicked,’” said Piedmont Theatre student Clayton Maddox.
“Emilia Perez” stars Zoe Salanda, a Dominican actress best known for her supporting role in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” as Gamora and “Avatar.” Although Salanda is a great actress, many feel as if “Wicked” should have won more awards than two at the Oscars.
Instead of handing out awards to “Wicked,” the Academy performed multiple tributes to the film. The opening night starts off with Ariana Grande and Cythnia Erivo performing songs from “The Wiz” and “The Wizard of Oz.” Later, Queen Latifah sings “Ease on Down the Road,” another song from “The Wiz.” Apparently, this is their way to make the audience and viewers feel better about “Wicked” not winning much of anything.
On the other hand, we have special appearances by Adam Sandler in his iconic outfit that openly expresses he will not wear anything fancy for the Oscars. Although this may be scripted, Connon O’Brian, kicks Sandler out for not dressing “appropriately.”
Further along in the night, we capture that O’Brian mispronounces Samuel L. Jackson’s name, instead saying Samuel M. Jackson. The cringe continues with O’Brian throughout the night as he tries to joke and play with the audience.
Until next year, for another night at the Oscars.
