Piedmont’s lacrosse teams are hot off of a strong 2024 season and coming into 2025 looking for playoff revenge.
The men’s team finished 2024 with an amazing record of 14-3, their season ending with a tough loss to Pfeiffer in the USA South Final. The women’s squad finished 2024 at 10-9, losing to a strong Meredith College squad in the semifinals.
“We may not have the best numbers but we have the best team chemistry I have seen,” said senior Ava Trankina. “Our new assistant coach Monti [Hendrix] has been a big help with our offense and coaching.”
The women’s squad retained many stars from 2024, only losing four seniors to graduation. Senior goalie Rachel Verner made 89 saves in her eight starts in goal, as she played in all 19 of Piedmont’s contests. She’ll look to continue to shut down the opposition as the Lady Lions look for redemption. She will be helped on the offensive side by senior midfielder Ava Trankina, who was the team leader in goals last season. The Lady Lions’ squad is back and better than ever for 2025, bolstered by a group with great chemistry and a dangerous roster.
On the men’s side, one goal is in sight: a conference title. They suffered a loss in the conference final to Pfeiffer by only three goals to end 2024, and they will be looking to make it right back to the final yet again. They must do so without scoring machine Brady McGuire and lockdown goalie Johnny Matrona, as they both graduated in 2024. A powerful sophomore class will look to step up in his stead. The men’s team also locked down Malone transfer Nolan Winter, brother of sophomore Nick Winter.
“We’ll play [Pfeiffer] twice this year and we’re looking for revenge,” said Nick Winter. “They took the title last year, and we want to take it right back.”
Both Piedmont lacrosse squads are motivated groups looking to continue their success in the 2025 season.
