In need of a new study spot? Located in the heart of downtown Cornelia, BSG Cafe prides itself on providing quality coffee to Habersham County.
With a rotating menu of seasonal lattes and chai teas, as well as pastries and foods sourced locally, BSG’s unique and cozy cafe has been serving Cornelia for just over a year now.
However, their story starts in 2019 when Jake and Zach Staggs, two brothers from the Demorest area, started roasting beans under the name Black Stagg Artisan Goods.
“That’s our last name, so we were just kind of toying around with it and coffee’s black,” said shop owner Zach Staggs.
After a trademark lawsuit, they officially rebranded to simply BSG and switched to a storefront. From there Zach took over, opening the original brick and mortar in Hayesville, North Carolina.
“The reason I started to look into the coffee business was because I was always in cafes working. That’s just my office. So I figured if I could work in a cafe that was mine, that would be even better,” said Staggs.
BSG’s Hayesville location gained traction and regulars quickly, but Staggs was commuting from Demorest, Georgia to Hayesville every day.
The long commute time for Staggs’ made the decision to move the current storefront in Hayesville to downtown Cornelia, Georgia easy. There he has rooted the BSG name in the community.
Since arriving in Cornelia, BSG has provided a menu completely reliant on customer feedback.
“If they (customers) keep ordering it, we leave it up there. They stop ordering it, we just kick it out,” said Staggs. With specialty lattes like the Salted Chatuge and rotating list of chai teas like the Hug in a Mug, BSG carries a variety of intrinsic menu items.
BSG’s menu does not stop there. Their menu also includes food items such as in-house sandwiches and cookies from local vendors.
Staggs’ community roots are strong. He recently won the “Big Red Apple Award” for his efforts at the Habersham Chamber’s meeting for his ties to the community. BSG has supported and hosted a plethora of local events including 5k’s, Thursday night acoustic groups, and the upcoming Desert Crawl.
Although BSG is young, Staggs has big dreams for the establishment and a humble approach for himself.
“I want to be a place that’s here forever,” said Staggs. “I don’t even care if people remember who did it. I just want to have a corner spot.”
