Donald John Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on Jan. 20, 2025.
Trump previously held the position of president of the United States between 2017 and 2021. He is the second United States president in history to have been elected to two non-consecutive terms.
Newly inaugurated Trump stepped into the Capitol Rotunda, surrounded by hundreds of political elites, prepared with a speech that would repeat themes from his historic and divisive campaign message. Trump vowed to put “America first.”
“The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and become respected again by every nation. During every single day of the Trump Administration, I will simply put America first,” stated Trump at the beginning of the inaugural address.
According to the policies listed on Trump’s website, he calls for America’s economic revival through lower taxes, bigger paychecks and more jobs for American workers. He has pledged to reduce federal regulations, simplify the tax system and protect American jobs from unfair foreign competition. He also plans to increase spending on defense and infrastructure while reducing the deficit.
After winning the presidential election in November 2024, Donald Trump met with outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House, marking a symbolic gesture of a peaceful transfer of power. This meeting was the first time the two had come face-to-face since their last presidential debate in June before Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the race.
Trump is expected to sign around 100 executive orders soon after he takes office. These orders are expected to address concerns about immigration, climate policy, energy policy and diversity initiatives in the federal government.
To assure the American people, he addressed his plans to carry out executive orders almost immediately. “Today, I will sign a series of historic executive orders. With these actions, we will begin the complete restoration of America and the revolution of common sense. It’s all about common sense.”
Trump promised the American people that one of his first actions would be to take executive action to seal off the southern border and start rolling out extremely massive deportation efforts, taking complete control of the U.S. military to crack down on unauthorized immigration.
“First, I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” stated Trump.
During the inaugural address, Trump stated that he would also be signing an executive order that would eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government. This executive order will be directing federal agencies to work together with the White House to identify and eliminate DEI programs.
Other executive orders Trump is expected to sign today aim to expand oil and gas drilling by reversing Biden’s policies on domestic energy production and revoking Biden’s recent directive on artificial intelligence.
“The inflation crisis was caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices. That is why today I will also declare a national energy emergency. We will ‘Drill, baby, drill!’” Trump said.
With commitments to address immigration, climate policy, energy policy and diversity initiatives, the coming years will reveal how his ambitions translate into action.
