Ally Nguyen is a former creative writing student at Piedmont University. While at Piedmont she immersed herself with the locals joining in in several community events and services. Using the skills learned while enrolled at Piedmont she was able to craft her newest work “Scarlett.”
“Scarlet” is a prose poetry genre book and the latest production that Nguyen has been working on for the past two years. Creative writing classes here at Piedmont have helped Nguyen piece this book together. During the creation of this book, Nguyen found that one of her favorite poems from “Scarlet,” is “Emptiness.” Nguyen drew from her experience as a transgender woman to write this book and while the piece may contain graphic language and triggers, its intentions to readers are far from at surface level glance. “Scarlet,” also dives into mental health and looks to support those who battle with those issues.
When looking to encourage other writers in following their dreams, Nguyen urges “to my fellow writers and wannabes: don’t stop. Keep writing, even if it’s garbage. You and you alone are your worst critic.”
Nguyen continued with, “Writing is an art that requires continuous practice, masterpieces aren’t born overnight, just because you’re not a literary great or a successful commercial author now doesn’t mean you never will! Write!” Nguyen has not stopped there, as she is already working on a manuscript for her next work.
