The Lions kicked off the week with a 3-1 win over Wesleyan College on Wednesday, Oct 23, recognizing their three seniors before their victory.
The trio of seniors: Bryn White, Vanessa Manzo and Jessica Sconyers have combined for 247 points this season.
“The energy was great out there,” said senior Jessica Sconyers, “It was super fun having all the girls having our back tonight.”
The Lions easily won their first set 25-12 with Wesleyan College prevailed to win the second set 25-23. But ultimately, the Lady Lions were too much to handle as they won the following two sets 25-17 and 25-9 to cap off an excellent senior day for the trio, as Sconyers had 12 kills, White added 7 kills and Manzo contributed 42 assists and four aces.
On Oct. 26, the Lions traveled to LaGrange College to compete in a tri-match against the LaGrange Panthers and the Covenant Scots. The Lions beat the Panthers 3-2 as Junior Katie Hubbard contributed 17 kills in the win.
The Lions could not win against Covenant, losing 0-3. The Scots are a highly competitive team in the conference, with a 10-4 record.
The Lions (5-16, 5-7 in the CCS) will go on the road to play Agnes Scott College on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Women’s Soccer
The Lady Lions split their final two games of the regular season, with an emphatic 4-0 win against LaGrange College on Oct. 23, followed by a 3-0 senior day loss to Maryville College on Oct. 25.
“I couldn’t be more proud of these five seniors and what they have accomplished in their careers,” said Head Coach Timmy McCormack, putting the spotlight on his senior players Chloe Spradlin, Victoria Sierra, Ayndi Wimmer, Sophie Wells and Haylee Dornan. “They dedicated themselves to the women’s soccer program at Piedmont, and they will leave a lineage of success that sets the standard for generations to come just like those before them that they followed.”
The Lady Lions went into the week with only one loss in conference play and continued that hot streak with a 4-0 win over LaGrange College. They put on a first-half masterclass scoring three goals in the first 45 minutes, two of which came inside 10 minutes of play. All four goals in the game were scored by a different individual: freshman Alison Witkiewicz, junior Sierra Judson, freshman Madison Johnson and sophomore Taylor Crawford.
The Lady Lions looked to end the regular season on a winning streak, but fell to Maryville College 3-0. They couldn’t quite recover from the three early goals scored by Maryville, which all came within the first 25 minutes of gameplay.
“Friday’s game showed us we still have room to improve both individually and as a team,” McCormack said. “I’ve greatly enjoyed coaching this group throughout the season, and I believe they are excited for the opportunity that is ahead of them.”
The Lady Lions (7-5-4, 5-2-1 in the CCS) earned a first-round bye in the CCS Tournament, and will host a semifinal game on Nov. 6.

Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team lost both of their games at home last week against Covenant College, 3-1, and Maryville College, 2-1.
Against Covenant, sophomore Andre Grant would score the only goal for Piedmont in the 31st minute before the Scots would respond with three goals of their own for the 3-1 win. A couple of days later, the team would be back on the field against Maryville College. Piedmont would again score the first goal, this time by sophomore Davis Knight in the 56th minute. However, Maryville would respond with two more goals to win the game 2-1.
“Both games were against historically two of the best teams in our conference,” coach Jimmy Stephens said. “I believe we played well, but just came up short on the score sheet.”
The next stop for Piedmont’s men’s soccer team will be at Asbury University in Kentucky in the first round of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament. They enter that match with a 7-8-2 record, 2-4 in the CCS.

Men’s Golf
The Piedmont men’s golf B and C Teams traveled to Rome, Georgia, this past week to end the fall slate in the final round of the Chick-fil-A Invitational. The Piedmont men’s team finished 16th out of 24 teams, highlighted by Senior Kayden White, who shot a 1-over-73 to pace the team, including four birdies on his round.
“Yeah, obviously, this week wasn’t the result we had in mind, but the entire team made strides and improvements throughout the tournament,” White said.
Sophomore Caleb Vancil recorded four birdies in the 70s, helping the Lions score four times, and he finished with a 3-over-75. Newcomers Drew Anness and Elliot Mehler scored 77, five over par.
The C Team also increased their position, moving one spot to 22nd.
“We are just going to use the offseason to get better and come back ready to go for the spring,” White said.
This event concludes the fall season for the Lions; they will be back next spring at the Savannah Invitational beginning Monday, March 3.
