Halloween, a holiday that is celebrated on Oct. 31, is a holiday that is celebrated often with spooky costumes, jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkin carvings and the giving of candy. The holiday marks the beginning of Allhallowtide, a three-day Christian triduum dedicated to remembering the dead that begins with Halloween and is followed by All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2).
Spooky costumes are a staple of Halloween. When you venture into the packed yet exciting streets on Halloween you will definitely spot a couple of scary fun costumes. There are always fun but scary costumes that will always be in style, such as the classic witch, clown or perhaps vampire. However, on occasion you will spot a particularly disgusting costume. But what qualifies as a disgusting costume?
More often than not the worst Halloween costumes will be the ones you find in stores. These costumes are often made of horrible material and the sewing is usually poorly done. However this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t indulge in the cute Halloween accessories you may be seeing at your local Walmart or perhaps Spirit Halloween– you just shouldn’t purchase your entire outfit from said places. If you truly want to indulge in a fantastic Halloween costume you should find other ways to curate your outfit.
If you’re unwilling to sew an entire outfit from scratch as that takes a lot of time and effort you can thrift some pieces from thrift stores to create a simple or perhaps fantastic outfit! For example, if you yearn to be an angel for Halloween you can purchase a cheap white dress from your local thrift store and perhaps a cute halo from Walmart. In this way you are saving money and saving yourself from obtaining a horrific outfit.
Another vital part of Halloween is the candy aspect. Kids and parents are always bustling down the streets during Halloween searching for homes to venture up to. But for what reason? To gather candy to stuff into their buckets of course! However there is good candy and bad candy that is often tossed out during Halloween.
One of the most popular candies that are handed out during Halloween is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and for good reason. I mean who doesn’t love chomping into those cups of small perfectly rounded chunks of peanut butter deliciousness? These are the pieces of candy that should be handed out during Halloween. Don’t forget the infamous Hershey Kisses!
What qualifies as a nasty piece of candy? I’ll throw it out there right away– Candy Corn. Candy Corn is an atrocious almost despicable piece of candy that should be tossed as soon as it enters a candy bucket. Many say that candy corn has a memorable texture and a honey-forward flavor but I disagree. Candy corn is an atrocious waxy candy that is infiltrated with an ungodly amount of sugar. This candy should be obliterated and wiped off the face of the earth.
Candy corn isn’t the only horrific piece of candy that exists, there is one that almost everyone will agree with. Licorice. Even though licorice comes in a variety of colors and flavors nothing can disguise the awful texture and taste of licorice. Its rubbery sheen makes the average person cringe- only the most despicable willingly enjoy licorice.
With all of this in mind we should all acknowledge that everyone is gearing up for yet another holiday of dressing up partying and handing out candy. Although everyone may have different opinions about a variety of topics regarding Halloween we all have the opportunity to keep the spirit of Halloween alive in the best way possible, which is by treating others with kindness and enjoying the thrills of the holiday responsibly.
