The long-awaited month-long holiday has finally made its return to Helen. Oktoberfest is in full effect, with people all over the country traveling to the small German town to drink as much as they can while dressed in traditional German apparel.
Oktoberfest is a world-famous beer festival that originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig. Held annually from September to October, it attracts millions of visitors who enjoy traditional Bavarian beer, brewed explicitly for the festival and various German foods like pretzels and sausages.
The festival features lively entertainment, including folk music, amusement rides and cultural performances, creating a festive atmosphere. Many attendees dress in traditional attire, such as lederhosen and dirndls, making it a vibrant celebration of German heritage that is family-friendly and enjoyed by people of all ages.
Oktoberfest starts earlier than Oct. 1, with the first day being Sept. 5, and runs all the way through Oct. 27. While most of the events are for those over the age of 21, there are still plenty of activities, families and opportunities for people under 21 to participate in. Helen has multiple shops, food joints and fun activities.
Various food options are offered, from bratwursts, BBQ sandwiches, pretzels with beer cheese and different sides. On Helen’s website, you can find the prices of each food and drink item and the location of each food stand.
If you are looking for activities you can do under 21, there is Alpine mini golf, Cool River Adventures and Clarkesville Lanes. The restaurants in Helen allow people of all ages to be there until 9 p.m. After 9 p.m., it is strictly 21 and over.
“Oktoberfest is a great excuse to hang out with friends dressed in lederhosen and just have a good time,” said Senior Hadden Carswell.
Make sure you check Helen’s website for the hours and the admission prices that are subject to change.
