Piedmont is officially a month into the school year, and Campus Police has already started monitoring activity in Piedmont’s off-campus housing, The Village.
Three days after classes began, Chief Andrews, head of Campus Police, took to the Piedmont app to discuss Village behavior:
“This morning, The Village was clean of litter and no broken bottles. No large crowds were gathered outside the buildings holding cans or bottles.”
The Village is an apartment-style dorm located a mile off campus. Those over 21 living in The Village are allowed to request an alcohol permit, with exceptions. Those requesting an alcohol permit must live in a suite where all roommates are of age. In addition, rooms with alcohol permits are not allowed to have underaged students in the room in the presence of alcohol.
Senior Village resident Ryan Colwell adheres to this policy, stating, “If you are twenty-one and over and consuming alcohol in a safe way, there should not be an issue.” Being of age, Colwell is now a second-year village resident who has “never run into any issues with campo.”
Although the Village is considered off-campus housing, the Residential Living Department and Campus Police reside over it. There are five residential assistants in the Village and the Village AD. The student RAs are to report any infractions they might encounter or are reported to them by other residents. Despite it being the RA’s job to monitor conduct, Campus Police are often seen patrolling the village.
“Sometimes it feels like they watch too closely, which is kind of frustrating,” said Colwell. “But at the end of the day, the campus police’s job is to keep us safe.”
The Piedmont Village Alcohol Use Policy is put in place to keep students safe and allow them freedom. Visit Campus Police’s office inside of Getman-Babcock Hall for a paper copy of the policies or online at piedmont.edu.
