Due to the new policy, students using the computer labs for art and video projects need help logging in. The new policy has been implemented on Piedmont University’s Demorest and Athens campuses to ensure that students abide by Gramm-Leach-Bliiley (GLBA) requirements, including new password requirements.
LaMica S. Justice, the Chief Information Officer of the Office of Information Technology (IT), said, “We must ensure the recommended password complexity is in place, as Piedmont receives Title IX funding from the Department of Education (Pell Grants and loans), so there are some Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) requirements we must adhere to. Mostly, all the requirements reference network security and privacy of all campus stakeholders.”
However, students need clarification on why they need to change their password. Now, students who are used to their old passwords must go through the process of creating a new password.
“At this point, it is just annoying that I must remember a new password after having been here for three years. It does not make me feel like my information is any safer,” said Junior Savannah Ledbetter.
In response to the complaints, Justice said, “We understand that the campus community may not agree with the need for some of the changes that need to be in effect, but to continue receiving Title IX funding, there are minimal changes that must be implemented.”
Students should know that once you change your password, it will change your password not only for Microsoft but also for the Piedmont app, Canvas, eRezlife, Starfish and more technologies used under Piedmont. So, students must remember their password, for it applies to more than just Outlook accounts.
