If you know the big three, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a lot more surrounding We Don’t Trust You than tracks, features, and quality bars that meet the eye and ear. If you don’t know the big three, you’re in for a world of tea. Drake and J. Cole, who are on tour together currently, took verbal shots from Kendrick Lamar in his featured verse on track six of Future and Metro Boomin’s newest masterpiece. The song titled “Like That” has broken records of its own and hit levels on the charts quicker than Billboard accounted for, including its three-week reign at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.
Aside from one song, the album in its entirety climbed to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 after being released for just seven days. Did it skip the line of most recently released bops because of the sound and beat production, or because an unexpected fire amongst rap greats was started.
You may be thinking to yourself, “who cares about all this drama?” Well, you have to admit, there is one beautiful product only produced as a result of feuds amongst rappers. You guessed it, diss tracks. Sparking a small flame can either burn the negative energy, or the career of the artist responsible. Remember Niki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion? That won’t be talked about because it deserves its own article, but you get the point.
After the release of We Don’t Trust You on March 22nd, 2024, shockwaves followed amongst listeners who were already eager for the promised drop of a second masterpiece back-to-back, but now also had drama to spark their interest.
It doesn’t seem like Kendrick knew what he was starting, because the response to his verse that drew targeting penalties from start to finish, has now hit the music streaming platform interface. After being leaked on TikTok and buzz turning into bass, Drake dropped his response to K-Dot, Push Ups. This single not only triples the intensity of the lyrical playmaking, it gives us the side of Drake we rarely see, but die-hard fans feign for. Back To Back was Drake’s diss track to Meek Mill back in 2015 that we’ll never forget, proving that he isn’t weak under attack, he’s even stronger. “You ain’t in no big three. SZA got you wiped down, Travis got you wiped down, Savage got you wiped down,” said Drake without name dropping his opponent on Push Ups.
Will Kendrick respond back with more than a feature verse and drop a single of his own? What is the root of this feud? Who won this round, Drake or Kendrick? You decide for yourself. All of these questions may never be answered, but one thing is for sure, some ruthless and phenomenal lyricism was released and it deserves listening if you’re looking for a new pregame bop.
