Piedmont head strength and conditioning coach John Delf-Montgomery has been invited for an NBA tryout by the Atlanta Hawks. This comes after news of a scout being seen at Piedmont’s intramural basketball games came out a week prior.
“Delf has the knowledge and vision to be the next Zion Williamson in this league,” said the anonymous NBA scout. “With some fine-tuning, it’s only a matter of time until we see him in future All-Star games.”
Delf-Montgomery was noticed in his match-up last week against the Piedmont swim team’s intramurals basketball side. The Retired Employees’ team defeated the swimmers with the help of a Delf-Montgomery double-double of 11 points and 11 assists.
“I would say this comes as a shock, but it was only a matter of time until my abilities were noticed,” said Delf-Montgomery.
Delf-Montgomery declined to comment on rumors of Hawks star Trae Young inviting him to a workout before the tryout, scheduled for the summer.
“This is a bunch of crap. It should have been me. I carry this team anyway,” said intramurals teammate and assistant director of athletic communications Davis Barlow.
The Atlanta Hawks sit at tenth place in the Eastern Conference with a 34-40 record. If Delf-Montgomery is signed, he would be slated to start for the Hawks at the beginning of the 2025 NBA season.
“I love this school and the athletes I work with. I would never turn my back on Piedmont, unless I get this tryout. In that case I’m out of here,” said Delf-Montgomery.
Delf-Montgomery will compete in the intramural playoffs on Tuesday, April 2 and Thursday, April 4. Games start at 6:30 pm inside the gym at the student commons.
