Hello, Lions! This week, we delve into the world of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare skin condition that makes the skin extremely fragile, leading to tears, sores, and blisters with minimal friction.
EB is often caused by a faulty gene, making the skin more delicate than it should be. While it’s not contagious, it can significantly impact the lives of those affected. Jada Williams, a sophomore at Piedmont University, graciously shared her experience with EB. Jada emphasized that EB is not to be taken lightly, as it has influenced every aspect of her life since it first appeared around the age of 13.
When asked about her experience with EB Jada said that “EB is often mistaken for many different things. Having sensitive skin can be embarrassing in many ways. Whenever I’m being active outside or even just playing around the house it can lead to my EB to flare up. Growing up in Florida, it was always very hot which prompted me to want to be outside all the time. This caused me to hurt myself a lot, which lead to bruises and red marks everywhere on my skin. For people with EB it takes longer for cuts to heal due to the weakness of the skin”.
Despite initial perceptions that it was normal, Jada’s skin would blister and bleed after short exposures to various environmental factors.
In her own words, Jada recounts, “I’ve been to a couple EB treatment centers myself. They’re a little on the expensive side, but I can say ever since I’ve started going, the treatments they have me doing have helped tremendously”. As we wrap up this week’s article, we extend our gratitude to Jada for shedding light on the challenges faced by individuals with EB.
When asked about any other comments Jada said “don’t let people make you feel unworthy and don’t ever think down upon yourself”.
Stay safe, Lions, and join us next week for an article on Pachyonychia Congenita.
