As of the upcoming week, the topic will be regarding acne. “As we dive into the world of acne, a common skin condition affecting many, we’ll explore its causes and solutions. Acne, a prevalent skin condition, occurs when hair follicles under the skin become clogged, leading to inflammation, swelling, redness, heat, and pain.”
Research indicates that acne is among the top three skin concerns in African Americans and those of Latino and Asian backgrounds. Although patients of color are not necessarily more prone to acne than fair-skinned individuals, the residual effects are often much more severe in darker skin.
Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans annually. Acne usually begins in puberty and affects many adolescents and young adults. Approximately 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 experience at least minor acne.
While it commonly appears on the face, it can also affect the back, chest, and shoulders. Most people see acne resolve by their thirties, but for some, like Morgan, the journey is prolonged. Morgan Green, a senior Criminal Justice Major at Kennesaw State, who grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, bravely shares her journey with acne.
“Acne started around the age of 12 and despite trying various ointments, shower gels, and creams, my flare-ups continued to slowly be intensified during my teenage years” Morgan said. “It was a persistent struggle I dealt with until discovering proactive, a revolutionary acne cream that worked wonders for me” Morgan said. As Morgan testifies, acne is a challenge that spans ages, affecting both teenagers and adults.
When asked what advice she would offer other people with acne she said, “While there are treatments that work for some, the journey to clear skin can be unique for everyone”.
When asked Morgan stated that if using many different treatments and it still dose not resolve your acne, she said. “I often recommend a topical retinoid cream to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin. Retinoids also have some anti-inflammatory effects, and they increase the rate at which our skin cells divide. This helps to heal the skin faster. Many over-the-counter treatments contain retinoids.”
As Morgan stated acne has many different treatments, while they may not be 100% affective it can still help. Benzoyl peroxide is a treatment that works as an antiseptic to reduce the number of bacteria on the surface of the skin.
It also helps to reduce the number of whiteheads and blackheads and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Benzoyl peroxide is usually available as a cream or gel. It’s used either once or twice a day.
Stay tuned for next week’s article, where we’ll delve into the world of alopecia.
