With just a few days to go before the opening matches, the Lions are once again ready to dominate the Collegiate Conference of the South.
Last spring, the Lady Lions went 7-0, pulling off their fifth consecutive undefeated regular season before finishing victorious in the conference championship.
On the men’s side, the Lions finished with yet another winning record. They also made a run in the conference tournament before falling 5-2 to Covenant in the final.
“I’m looking forward to having another chance to compete with my teammates,” said sophomore Connor Phelps. “We’ll have another chance to try to win the conference this year after barely losing last year, so I’m excited.”
Although both teams had great success last year, neither team is ready to settle.
“My hope and goal for the season is to get another ring,” said junior Bri Laidman. “We have a streak going, and I want to keep it.”
Last year, the Lions spent their spring break playing in Orlando, Florida. This trip created unforgettable memories for the teams, on and off the court. The athletes are looking forward to returning to Orlando this spring for five to six matches powered by USTA.
“We play three days with two matches each day, and we get to have free days as well to do our own thing,” said Laidman. “It’s a good time to bond and get to know everyone better.”
Monday, March 18 will be a special night for the Lions, as they encourage Piedmont students to come out to the home matches against Salisbury. Piedmont Tennis will provide food for fans attending, and spirit wear giveaways throughout the day. The matches begin at 3 p.m.
With 12 total seniors between the two programs, these teams have a lot to play for. With determination and commitment, this spring could be monumental for Piedmont.
Phelps said, “I am going to try to control the things that I can control going into matches.”
Both teams will open their season at the Transylvania Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky on Feb. 10 for the men, and Feb. 17 for the women.
