Alexander Thomlinson made his second debut as a Cantabile singer, this time as the director.
Thomlinson was a music major at what was Piedmont College from 2013-2017. During his time as a lion, he was a part of many ensembles including Piedmont Singers and Cantabile. He later went to Westminster Choir College for a master’s degree in music composition.
“I recruited Alex very hard! I was so pleased when he decided to come to Piedmont. He showed a great deal of potential as a composer and arranger and wrote a wonderful arrangement of ‘Georgia On My Mind’ for Cantabile while he was in the group. I am very proud of his accomplishments and pleased he was available to direct Cantabile.” Said the former director of Cantabile and director of the Conservatory of Music, Dr.Wallace Hinson.
Cantabile is an elite audition-based and nine-voice acapella choir that sings all different kinds of music. Founded in the year 2000, the ensemble continues to offer well tuned entertainment to countless audiences every year.
Thomlinson, alongside Julia DeMello, Ellawyn Ketch, Nicholas Knox, Ananda Muñoz Salas, Nicole Kayson, Jesse Smedley, Auldyn Walker, and Malachi Young produced a stunning concert on Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Conservatory of Music’s Concert Hall.
The concert included songs ranging from contemporary Kacey Musgrave’s “Rainbow” to classical “Nunc Dimittis” by Arvo Pӓrt and everything in between. There was something for every kind of listener. Audience member and sophomore at Piedmont, Chloe Chandler stated, “I really enjoyed the selection of music chosen by the new director. It really showed the versatility of the choir.”
If you missed this concert, you won’t have the possibility to see Cantabile again until next semester. However, you can join the Conservatory of Music on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel for the Conservatory of Strings concert.
