A one-shot victory at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, was all that stood between junior Josh Hebrink and the NCAA Division III Championship.
“It felt great when I won,” said Hebrink. “I had been working so hard for it, so it was very exciting and gave me a little relief. It was so meaningful because of all the hard work put in since I got to Piedmont.”
In the Spring of 2021, Hebrink competed in seven events and produced a 74.83 scoring average in 18 rounds. In the final round of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate, Hebrink equaled the season-low round of 70 and helped lead the team to a t-16 finish. As a sophomore in the 2021-2022 season, he played in 29 rounds and delivered a 74.17 scoring average. In the fall and spring, had six consecutive par-or-better rounds. At Notre Dame, won the GCAA Summer Series Event, defeating a number of Division 1 players. No one could have stopped Hebrink from winning. Last season, Hebrink took two shared individual titles, delivered five rounds in the 60’s, tied the Piedmont University record with 6-under 66 in the final of the National Championship and brought home the individual National Championship.
Even though Hebrink took home the title, the Piedmont men’s golf team finished runner-up behind Carnegie Mellon. Despite the second-place finish, Hebrink said there is hope for Piedmont in the upcoming years.
“It just raises my expectations of what we can accomplish this year,” said Hebrink. “We will need to keep our heads down and keep working hard. The thing about golf is that you always need to stay in the present. That’s what we need to continue to do as a team. We have a lot of new guys this year that added a lot of depth to the team. That will help us stay competitive within our team and nationally against everyone else.”
Piedmont men’s golf and Hebrink will begin their campaign back to the NCAA championship in their spring 2024.
