The newest Hulu series, “Chad Powers”, released its first episode on Monday, Sept. 30 and has aired a new episode every Monday ever since. Now five episodes in, the show has found its combination of comedy and drama.
The show is meant to mock a skit put on by Eli Manning, one of the co-producers of the show, with his brother Peyton. In the original ESPN docuseries in 2022, Eli Manning put on makeup and a new character to try out at a junior college.
While trying to act like a non-NFL player, Manning put on a dorky character who was wildly good at quarterbacking. All of the players on the junior college team were impressed and when Manning revealed himself, it made for a good laugh.
Hulu took the name Manning used, kept the comical scheme and added some drama. As a Hulu original and a Disney branch, it has some obvious Disney-like aspects. Ridiculous humor, constant plot twists and unrealistic/exaggerated heroism scream Disney.
The show’s plot takes off quickly, explaining how Chad Powers became Chad Powers. A failed player trying to earn his second chance through a new personality. Hiding this personality seems unrealistic, but that is what makes it a show.
A lot of this “build-up” over the first episode or two involves blatant humor that is only funny because it is ridiculous. As the show goes on, the drama builds up, making it more entertaining.
The awkwardness of Chad’s character, along with his relationship with others, keeps the show comical despite its serious twist.
The show is not necessarily a football fan’s show. While it is centered on the game, someone who does not know much about the sport could still watch and enjoy it, despite commercials that portray it differently.
Overall, the show is 7.5/10. I am entertained and excited about future episodes. The ridiculousness and Disney hand in the show lowers its score; however, I recommend it for its humor and drama.
