HOW TO HELP HURRICANE HARVEY VICTIMS
August 30, 2017
Over the last several days, Hurricane Harvey has caused catastrophic flooding in southeast Texas. The storm has caused numerous deaths and has created over $40 billion in damages. Heavy rains and flooding are expected to continue until at least through Friday. Brock Long, Director of FEMA, is calling Hurricane Harvey the worst disaster in Texas history, and expects the recovery from the tropical storm to last several years.
Here’s how you can help the victims of the tropical storm:
DONATE MONEY
Numerous organizations are accepting donations to help the people hurt by Hurricane Harvey. These include the American Red Cross, Heart to Heart International, Samaritan’s Purse, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, Global Giving, and Save the Children.
Many victims of the tropical storm have turned to GoFundMe to seek donations. Here, you can donate to families directly.
To help the abundance of animals that are suffering from the hurricane, donate to the Houston Humane Society or the San Antonio Humane Society.
CONTRIBUTE FOOD
Local food banks are accepting food and money donations to help provide for those affected by the storm. The Houston Food Bank and the Food Bank of Corpus Christi are both local organizations that are in dire need of donations.
GIVE BLOOD
Blood centers have called for extra donors, as they’re expecting a supply shortage due to the hurricane. You can find local blood drives via the American Red Cross website.
PROVIDE SHELTER
Many Texas residents were forced out of their homes due to the storm and have nowhere to live. If you have additional space in your home, you can offer it up to Hurricane Harvey victims through the app Airbnb. All service fees are waived for victims of the hurricane until September 25.
