HALEY HALL Staff Writer
For those who do not know me, my name is Haley Hall. I am a mass communications major here at Piedmont and I have played soccer all four years. When I was a freshman I started off as a business major, and the majority of my classes were just core classes.
The second semester I started taking a few of my entry level business classes and decided that maybe business was not for me. I then switched to mass communications and was very excited about it. I was talking to my fellow mass communications people and they said that they loved it but the only thing that I really have to worry about is Capstone. I looked at them funny and said, “Excuse me but I’m confused what is capstone?”
They all laughed and said you’re in for a rude awakening. I then went to my professor and asked her kindly if she could explain it to me, and she said it is the last thing that you do in your major before you graduate. Think of it as just a really big project. So I started thinking what could I possibly do for my last project. This is what I am going to be remembered by. So I finally got it.
Why don’t I do something that I’m extremely passionate about? Ding ding ding. It is fitness for me. I have always played sports growing up and have been very active. I have never really known how to properly workout at the gym. Being fit has just always been an easy thing for me because of all the sports that I played. I committed to play Piedmont College soccer on April 25, 2013 of my senior year in high school. That day I also got a gym membership. I started out just like everyone else being confused and not knowing how to properly workout.
I fell so in love with the gym that I decided that I wanted to work there as well. After a month of getting into my workouts and starting my new job, my boyfriend of four years broke up with me. I was devastated. Any girl that randomly gets broken up would know that our first reaction is questioning if we are fat our not. So I took this and ran with it, literally. I thank him now for the breakup because without him I wouldn’t have been able to start my freshman year. Being in shape gave me an advantage over the other girls.
I think fitness has always been the one thing that I can rely on. I’ve learned that people always leave, that life gets messy, and that there will be a lot of ups and downs in life. Fitness has helped me stay sane through it all. It has helped me with soccer. It has helped me stay focused on school. It has helped me stay confident. It has helped me become the person I am today. I can’t thank fitness enough for being such a big part of my life.
