Spring break is a time of year that college students across the nation look forward to. It’s a week filled with trips, beaches, family and friends and new experiences.
Each year Piedmont hosts a trip, known as alternative spring break, where students have the opportunity to go to another state and participate in various community service activities while making new friends and creating lifelong memories. Last year’s trip was to the lively city of New Orleans. As for this year, the alternative spring break trip is going to take place in Memphis, Tenn.
Memphis, Tenn. is well known for its music and food and is even the place where Elvis Presley, B.B. King and Johnny Cash recorded multiple albums. Memphis is the residing place of the legendary Sun Studios as well as Elvis Presley’s former home, the Graceland mansion. Other attractions include vari- ous art and music museums, zoos, natural parks and botanical gardens.
The alternate spring break application sent by Director of Student Activities and Campus Events Kimberly Crawford, describes this trip as “a positive way to spend your spring break week by serving others and learning while you serve.” The students who choose to take part of this trip will help by serving the local Memphis community by working with local organizations that deal with hunger, poverty as well as environmental awareness.
Not only will these students be volunteering their time for the greater good, they will also get to experience some of the historical sites Memphis has to offer. The trips cost is only $50, this includes everything from transportation, lodging and three meals a day. There is a limit however on the number of students that can take part in this trip, Piedmont is allowing only 10 students to go on this trip.
The trip is set to depart Monday, Feb. 29 and will return back to Piedmont that Friday, March 4. If you have any further questions regarding the trip, you can email Kimberly Crawford at [email protected] or stop by her office in the upper level of the student commons for more information.
