Piedmont has lots of interesting arts events coming up this semester that you won;t want to miss.
The Revien trio will be visiting Piedmont this Thursday. The trio includes two guitars and a cello and plays classical music, including many original compositions by the members, which uses the energy of pop and rock music with innovative twists like using their guitars and cello as percussion. The group has been together in a variety of bands for 17 years. The Athens based group is made up of all graduates of the University of Georgia School of Music and includes two former teachers at Piedmont: Phil Snyder and Kyle Dawkins. To hear more of their music, you can pick up their album coming out in February, or see them at 7:30 Thursday Jan. 15 in the chapel. Admission is free for all.
The Japanese Pottery exhibit will be having a reception at the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum. The exhibit features pottery from a variety of artists, and has been here since the end of December. Piedmont is only one of two stops the collection is making in the United States. The work has previously been shown in Europe, Asia and Africa. One of the artists, Ohi Toshio, will be giving a talk about his work. The reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Jan. 22 and all are invited.
Dr. Jeri-Mae G. Astolfi will be playing a piano concert. Astolfi plays a wide variety of music, ranging from the Renaissance era through today’s music. Some of the composers she will play include William Byrd, John Bull, Peter Phillips, Giovanni Picchi, Henry Cowell, Stacey Barelos, Geoffrey Gordon, François Morel, Marjan Mozetich, Phillip Schroeder and Betty Wishart. Astolfi is currently an artist-in-residence at Piedmont. She has been very active in the piano world, working as a clinician and a teacher at the University of Wisconsin. You can hear her work on her upcoming album “Wisconsin Soundscapes,” which will be released in March or by seeing her play for free Sunday Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. in the chapel.
